Ingrid and Joe access the support they need
"Accessing the support we need"
Ingrid Webber and her 5 year old son Joe access the Axiom Family Support Program on the Gold Coast. This is their story…
“Joseph sustained damage to his brain stem, similar to a stroke, just after he was born and this has affected his motor skills. Last year, we obtained Family Support Program funding from Disability Services Queensland (DSQ). We were given a choice of having Axiom or DSQ facilitate. We chose Axiom.
The wonderful thing about being with Axiom and having individualised funding is being in control of the decision-making again. I can choose which specialists we want to see and how often. A year ago, Joe and I were trying to save up to access therapy. We were reliant on service organisations who were stretched to provide what we couldn’t afford to access privately.
I couldn’t access the specialists that we are now seeing, and afford the mobility aids Joe needs, without the funding facilitated through Axiom. It’s all organised quickly too, without the need to chase things up. One phone call to Axiom and it gets done.
Every week Joe can access physio, and so now he has started crawling! We hope he will be walking thanks to the ongoing physio. Having regular therapy as part of his weekly routine is exactly what he needed.
Now, we feel like we’re really achieving something. To know that I can access these supports gives me greater confidence in my ability to care for Joe and be a good mum for him. Knowing that I can get the things he needs has made a huge difference, to both of us.
The word that best describes what Axiom’s service means to our family is “empowering’.”
